Dreaming Children by Lighting Children
Have you ever imagined what it would be like to live without light? I do not believe many people have imagined that because we think light as natural or normal. Among 7 billion people in the world, 1.7 billion people spend the night without any electricity. The Earth is divided into the northern and southern hemisphere. In southern hemisphere, there are almost no electric light at night, it so called night without light. 1.7 billion people who are living in northern hemisphere live night without light life. 70 percent of people who live in Africa spend black night without electric light or any kind of lights. So I conduct a campaign called Lighting Children to help them. The Lighting Children campaign is an energy share campaign. Sponsors send self-assembly solar light lanterns to children who live in the energy-hungry nations. Let me explain how to Lighting Children campaign give some help. Through my story I hope you decide to participate in this campaign.
Many parts of Africa do not have electricity, so when night comes, Africans use a kerosene lamps, but kerosene lamps have many problems. For example, fire risk, expensive cost of fuel, induction of lung disease, and global warming. Due to these problems, it is better to use solar light lantern than kerosene lamps. Solar light lantern has many advantages, such as protection of the environment, increase of the income, health protection, increase childrens educational opportunities, and saving family budget.
I will introduce advantages solar light lantern. First, Kerosene lamps emit carbon dioxide. Solar light lantern is important because solar light lantern will stop using kerosene lamp and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
Second, adults can do small jobs at night. It will be economic help to families.
Third, children who are exposed to danger like fire risk and respiratory disease by using kerosene lamps can protect their health and life.
Fourth, children can read books at night by lighting up with lantern charged solar light.
Finally, kerosene lamps account for about 30 percent of family income. Solar light lantern use nature energy, so families can save their household expenses.
I have been participating in this Light Children campaign since last September. I assemble solar light lanterns by myself. Assembly strategy is so easy that I made it within 10 minutes. The solar light lantern is able to charge in a short time and last long. So I think it is very innovative and it will be a really great assistance to people who need it. I feel really great to think of that my little help and small change will be big influence to people on the other side of the world. At the same time, I feel sorry about people die or get hurt by using kerosene lamps before using solar light lantern.
To summarize the advantages of using solar light lantern, is protection of the environment, increase of the income, health protection, increase childrens educational opportunities, and saving family budget. Now can you imagine such an inconvenient life with no light at night? Solar light lantern is a great hopes for Africans even though it only meets a basic right, the right to see. Many Africa children still need solar light lantern and our caring. Be a part of Lighting Children campaign. You can present hope and light to African children.

Should Korea have more than one official language?

Speaking more than two languages is great advantage in the global age. Especially English is already widely used in Korea, for example, singer name, song title, nameboard on the street. So I think that English is unofficial official language. We should have more than one official language and it should be English. As I mentioned, there are actually no place to not using English. Besides, many Koreans invest their money to learn English and we need language to communicate with people in different countries for global society.

Korea has no place to not using English. Wherever you are, you can see English. For example, you can catch that almost every nameboard on the street written in English. There are things, stuff or whatever that expressed in English. For example, singer name, song title, Tv program name. It is trend that even give a anglicized name for a baby. It is not too much to say that English used much more than Korean in Korea.

many Koreans invest their money to learn English. School curriculum include English as a required subject. To get a good score, student attend a English academy. Such competition put many student under a lot of stress. Some young student like kindergartener or elementary schoolchild go study abroad to speak English as if it were their’s native language. Like this way, many koran invest their money to learn English. I think we would rather adopt English as official language.

we need language to communicate with people in different countries for global society. People from all around the world live in Korea. Increasing number of this people is reason that Korea adopt second official language. English is already used official language in many country and many cultural area. It makes us better to communicate because people don’t need to learn new language. Also it will play a great role in helping them settle down In Korea.

Cold Caps: Providing scalp cooling solutions that can help reduce hair loss caused chemotherapy

Being diagnosed with cancer is one of the most frightening times in a person's life. Cancer patients feel pain and fear from the moment diagnose cancer. Anticancer therapy drug is so powerful that cause falling out of hair. External change like this, during anticancer therapy, is painful as much as anticancer therapy or chemotherapy. External change might put cancer patients in pain not just mentally but emotionally as well. One of the most striking change during cancer therapy is hair loss. Hair loss give cancer patients huge fear. Both men and women report hair loss as one of the side effects they fear most after being diagnosed with cancer. To solve this problem, Cold caps that can help reduce hair loss are developed in USA.

The invention is important because it prevent hair loss without medication. Cold cap is a cap contained refrigerant that is extremely cold. Cancer patients should wear this cold cap during chemotherapy. This is Cold caps therapy. Cancer patients should this caps from just before inject anticancer drugs to four or five hours after finish the therapy. During chemotherapy, chemical drugs reach all of your body along circulation of blood, so it lead to hair loss. Cold caps makes hair root stay dormant, so chemical drugs can't reach hair. Without artificial strong medicine that prevent hair loss, patients can keeps their hair.

Another reason that the invention is important is that it unburden cancer patients's psychological distress. They don't want to let people around them know that they get cancer. In an interview Vanessa Thomas, who is using the cold caps and once had breast cancer, said, "even if I am sick, I want people don't notice that." Also, trauma about losing their hair during chemotherapy is an added burden after they become cancer free. Cold caps minimize patients' psychological distress, because it prevent hair loss. They also don't need to hide their hair with wig or hat.

Cold cap therapy is already widely used in Europe. Recently, researchers of University of California released that cold caps are certainly effective. So interest about cold caps will be higher than now. I think the main significance of cold caps are it unburden patients' psychological and emotional distress. I am sure that If the cold cap therapy is widely used in all around the world, the number of cancer patients who suffer for hair loss will sharply decrease.

Literature: Young Boys become Mature

How could the boys grow up? I learn some valuable lessons through two characters in the two novels, those are 'The Little Prince' by Saint Exupery and 'When I Turned Nine'(in korean, it is 'Ahopsal Insaeng' by Wie Gi Cheol. I'd like to share with you something what I learned. I want to give you one mission before I write this essay. Guess that  the 'mature' that i've mentioned is a physical mature or mental mature. I will compare to each characters and tell you why I think they are similar or difference. Now, let me introduce two characters.
First literature that I'm going to tell you is The Little Prince. The character that I'm going to introduce is Little Prince. The story is this: Little prince who lived in a little planet called B-612, leave his home and travel other planets. Through traveling to other planets, The little prince is emotionally and mentally mature. His childlike feature come out well the front part of the novel. Before traveling, he think only of himself. I can say that It looks kind of selfish. For example, Little Prince love his rose in his little planet. But they don't know how to love. So he misunderstood the rose and had left his home. While traveling many other planets, he comes to the planet called 'Earth'. In the Earth, he meet one character called 'fox' and learn how to love. He realized then for the first time how to love and how to treat loved ones. Finally, Little Prince knows why he loves his rose at home. Little Prince learned that the rose he took care and protect under a glass cover is only one. About the rose, he take responsibility forever. The fox said that 'You become responsible forever, for what you have tamed'. The 'little' prince was reached maturity by almost end of his trip. I think he became real prince. not 'little' prince anymore.

Second novel that I'm going to tell you is When I Turned Nine. It is korean literature and it calls, in korean, 'Ahopsal Insaeng'. Main character boy named Yeomin Baek have many difficult experiences in his poor village, like the bitterness of unrequited love and discriminating against poor family compared with rich kids and so on. Maybe these experiences makes him to think and behave more like a grown-up than his peer. He also nice and faithful friend. End of the novel, through these experiences, he became more mentally mature. At the end of the story, Yeomin said “Finally, I became ten years old”. It means finally he cut his wisdom teeth. This line is the most impressive part to me. Someone might think nine is too young to know about life. Nevertheless, the young boy know a life of his own and I can feel more closer that thing through the line.  Yeomin reminds me of when I was nine years old. As I mentioned earlier, someone might think nine is too young to know about life and it is ridiculous. But in retrospect, when i was nine, I had my own troubles. Some of that troubles, i didn't even tell my family or friends. I was impressive Yeomin show us thses kind of things through his pure perspective.
The two characters have three similarities. First, both characters are young boy. So show us their growth process. Second, the boys went through many episode, meeting many characters who inspire them. Third, through episode, the boys turn from young and naive characters into matured characters in the end of the story.
However, there are two differences between them. First, in 'The little Prince',  little prince went off on a journey himself to find meaning about relationship between himself and rose. In the other hand, in 'When I turned nine', yeomin didn't go to trip. It shows what really happens in his daily life. Second, in 'The little prince', little prince got a kind of adviser or counselor. For example, fox and hunter work the role. Little prince was helped from them. So get to know what he want to know. On the contrary, in 'When I turned nine', there was no adviser or counselor. Yeomin see and undergo everything for himself.

Reading the books, I realize that to grow up, I must go through many life experience no matter how hard it is. If you want to mature, you do not afraid to face a difficulty. These two books really inspired me to know about life attitude. I think It is also be a main point.

How To Ensure A Sustainable Future?

What are we do to ensure a sustainable future? I think future is natural resources itself. Because people live life using natural resources. Natural resources is like engine oil of cars. Until now we lean on natural resources. We always did and we always will. So one existence who save natural resources most is human. To ensure a sustainable future, we ensure sustainable natural resources. There are two action people can take to ensure a sustainable future.

First action, we should save forest. We make many resources like paper, furniture and charcoal by cutting or burning wood. Hundreds of thousands of trees are cutting to make resources for a day. But it seems that there are few people to plant trees. So this is the tree depletion cycle. To make trees sustainable, do not damage trees. Plant trees. And prevent forest fires. These are small actions that you can do to preserve trees.

Second, we should try to purify air. Air pollution is a serious problem these days. To reduce air pollution, we use public transport than personal vehicles. Cars are largely responsible for the air pollution. Because cars emit exhaust gas and it cause air pollution. Another action, we can use bicycle or walk at close distance. By riding a bike or walking, instead of using cars, you can reduce air pollution and prevent global warming.

To summarize, we should save forest and try to purity air. these are two actions you must do to ensure a sustainable future. I will put the plans into action. First, i will plant a tree in every tree-planting day. Second, i will use public transport even if i get a driver's license. I hope you join with me. Your small actions make a big difference. It will make a sustainable future.

Machu Picchu: Geotourism's good example

Machu Picchu, 15th-century Inca site located 2,430 metres, is a historic Sanctuary. It declared a historical sanctuary in 1981 by UNESCO.  Because It has so many unrevealed riddle and they keep plant diversity.

There are two most important effects of geotourism.
1: We can preserve the unique and beautiful historic site.
2:  Geotourism also preserve animals and plants.

The possible effects of geotourism in Machu Picchu include preserving the site and natural ecosystems.
One possible effect of geotourism in Machu Piccu is that this is good to both people and environment.
Machu Picchu is an area of outstanding a geographical characteristic. Unique geographical feature make the historic site famous. To preserve the site, we need geotourism. If we choose geotourism, it make us sustains the heritage's geographical character.
Basically geotourism put purpose to not hurting nature. So we can also preserve animals and plants. If the environment keep the natural character, it will make a better environment for plants. Also good to animals because they live and do everything in there.

#2-Summary of reading; THE APE IN THE OFFICE

New research suggests business leaders and corporate employees may use conflict and cooperation in ways similar to their primate relatives.
Science writer and a specialist in animal behavior Richard Conniff suggests that the ways in which humans manage conflict and cooperation are just like primates. He sees similarities in the ways humans and primates use social networks and hierarchies to assert and gain status in their respective groups. He also points out that both humans and apes generally prefer to cooperate with each other.
According to Conniff, both primates and humans are essentially social creatures. They thrive in groups and are normally cooperative and helpful.
Also people and primates use similar social networking strategies to get ahead in life.
To both humans and primates, conflict and aggressive behavior do not gain long-term success for either species.
Conniff concludes that employees who cooperate in the office and primates who interact collaboratively in the wild find themselves happier, more effective, and more likely to survive.

-opinion:
This reading tell us about similarities in humans and primates. Especially talk about humans' social relationship and apes' primate relatives.
This reading only compared humans with apes. But I think these behavior patterns has shown all other animal species.
I usually watch animal documentaries and program. So I learned that almost all the animal species have hierarchies and order in their own way. I bet animal species that don't have their own order are don't exist.
Why the writer compare only human being and apes? Just because they look similar to each other? I wonder that.

-interesting points:
Comparing people and primates is excited my curiosity. Because I like animals and I always wonder about relation between humans and primates.
As I read this, I learned that humans and primates have similar behavior patterns in social community. Before I read this, I thought that the two species are completely different from each other. Because humans and primates have obvious differences in intelligence. But I was wrong.

-like/dislike:
This is easy to read because the reading is divided into four sections. I like this structure.
But I think the contents of section2(COOPERATION VS. CONFLICT) and section3(THE VALUE OF NETWORKING) overlap. They don't need to be divided into two sections.

My first blog and first post

 Hi everybody!
I've made my own blog for the class, Intermediate English Reading & Writing (IERW)!!
I think it will not be easy, but it will be fun.

 First, let me introduce myself.
I am Misun Lim and 22 years old. I am a second year student in Sungshin women's University. i'm doing double majoring in social welfare and english literature.

I'm so excited about this class.
I'm a little bit weak in the area of writing, but I'm definitely sure i will get better through this class.

My hobby is watching movie, watching youtube video and just walking for health.
I like all kind of movies but especially i like romantic and highteen movies. like, Letters to juliet, 17 again or Wild child.
My favorite youtube channel is Jacksgap (I seldom watch jacksgap channel these days because i'm busy ^^;). The boy who run that channel is Jack. he is doing many challenges and it inspired me to get more passion. I think he is very dreamy boy.
And i like walking around a nearby park. When i walk, i'm usually listening music. That makes me feel relaxed. Or I take walks with my older sister. during walking, we have a talk.

These is all about me!
